| Death of a grand-parent | Paralysis of the intestine. To be termed "paralytic ileus," the intestinal paralysis need not be complete, but it must be sufficient to prohibit the passage of food through the intestine and lead to intestinal blockage. Paralytic ileus is a common aftermath of some types of surgery. It can also result from certain drugs and from various injuries and illnesses. Paralytic ileus causes constipation and bloating. On listening to the abdomen with a stethoscope, no bowel sounds are heard because the bowel is inactive. Also simply called ileus. |

| Occupation | 03-05-1963 - saved a woman from under train. |
| Death of spouse | Nancy had suffered from motor neurone disease in her left arm for 10 years. Having survived the original prognosis of 5 years, when she noticed the same 'sensation' beginning in her right arm, she decided that she was not prepared to become physically useless. She willed herself to die. Sounds strange I know, but the week before she died she made me promise her that I would not allow any attempt to prolong her life - which I honoured (she had also told her GP and hospital consultants the same). This is reinforced by my godmother (Nancy's best friend) telling me at mother's wake, that the week prior to her death, Nancy had 'phoned her to say her good-byes. |
